Curriculum:
Mathematics
Our math series supports the First Grade curriculum. Students learn and reinforce skills through the use of games, manipulative and technology. Problem solving and critical thinking skills are also emphasized.![]()
Reading and Language Arts
The First Grade reading curriculum incorporates a variety of methods and materials to meet the needs of students. Our reading program is supported through our series. Phonics, strategies for decoding words and comprehension skills are taught through, whole group reading instruction, small group guided reading, and literacy centers. The Scholastic reading series provides authentic literature, which fosters the love of reading in our students. A "Home Reading Program", where students and parents spend time each day reading together, is also an important part of the total reading curriculum.Students begin writing the first day of school. Students write stories, write in journals, and respond to literature or events. Students also become more confident in the spelling by including correctly spelled, high frequency words in their writing.

Social Studies
Social studies is a great way for children to explore the world around them. This is achieved by using an integrated, thematic approach. Our students are learning about a number of different social skills throughout their first grade year. A number of areas are covered such as: where we live, map skills, family and friends, how to get along with others, jobs, needs and wants, American history, and how we celebrate American events.![]()
Science
The science curriculum is based on the state standards. The standards stress actively engaging the children to explore, observe, count, collect, measure, compare, and ask questions. Using some of the five senses, they investigate, describe, and discuss their natural surroundings and question why things move and change. Students ask questions and observe living things and become aware of plant and animal interaction. Students understand similarities and differences and make comparisons.
Health
First grade health curriculum motivates students to voluntarily take responsibility in protecting, maintaining, and improving their health. Content areas are:
Growth and Development
Mental and Emotional Health
Community Health and Environmental Health
Nutrition, Life in a Family
Consumer Health, Personal Health
Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs
Intentional and Unintentional Injury
Health Promotion
Disease Prevention
Physical Education
S.P.A.R.K. (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids) Program
The Physical Education Program adopted by Warrick County
In 2000, Warrick County School Corporation adopted a Physical Education program called S.P.A.R.K. This program is designed to teach social skills and enhance skills without reducing activity time. The activities do not stress winning or losing but improving your strength and activity level.
The SPARK program addresses the important public health problem by focusing on increasing physical activity during class in ways that are creative and fun for both student and teacher.
K-3 starts off their unit by learning very important class management techniques and mastering the eight locomotor skills used in most activities. The unit is called Perceptual Power. The children learn about personal and general space during playtime. After leaning techniques in Perceptual Power that are used throughout the rest of the units, children jump into GREAT GAMES! Each PE session begins with a SPARK STARTER or RHYTHMIC STARTER before engaging the lesson for the PE session. The units in SPARK are as follows: Perceptual Power, Great Games, Bean Bag Boogie, Parachute Parade, Happy Hoops, Jumping for Joy, Having a Ball, Let's Hit It, Dance With Me, and Superkid Stunts. Each year, the students develop their skills a little further with each unit!
