Curriculum
Math
Third
grade follows the Indiana Standards for the Math curriculum. At the
beginning of the year we review the concepts learned in second grade
in preparation for the ISTEP testing. Our third grade curriculum includes
graphing, place value, basic addition and subtraction with carrying
and regrouping, geometry, fractions, time, money, calendar, ordered
numbers, patterns, and probability. We begin the memorization of the
multiplication tables 1-12 in January (state standards require 1-9).
We also include a great deal of math enrichment and problem solving
with a variety of textbook and hands-on activities. These are done
both as a whole class and in small group settings. We are also required to participate in the Student Success Program (SSP). A standard is taught and assessed. Students that do not master a particular standard are then offered remediation through our "Learning Connection" teacher, Miss Sandusky.
Language
Arts
We
combine the Scholastic basal reader with literature books such as
Charlotte's Web, Johnny Appleseed, Ramona Quimby, Mr. Popper's
Penguins, Box Car Children, Flat STanley etc. Sometimes third grades attend live productions as we connect literature with fine arts. This integrated
language arts program extends across the whole curriculum in all content
areas. It centers around the basal and real books so to enable children
to experience common literature. To further enhance our well-rounded
reading program, we use a variety of nonfiction books during our "Book
Club" weeks. We want the students to become competent
with the style of reading that is needed in our information and technology
based society. We also utilize picture books with grammar and creative
writing strategies.
Weekly
Spelling tests are correlated with the basal reader stories.
Grammar
includes sentence structure, parts of speech, letter writing, capitalization,
and punctuation.
Students
do a great deal of creative and informational style writing using
strategies gleaned from professional sources such as Write Traits.
They become competent with a variety of story organizers and pre-planners
as they progress across the continuum from planning a story to publishing
the story.
Social
Studies
Third
graders study culture, locations, movements, maps, and landforms.
We take a field trip to the Warrick County 4-H Center to learn
about farm life.
Science/Health
The
third grade curriculum includes life cycles (plant and animal), the growing of beans, nutrition, personal hygiene, emotions,
self control, friendships, digestive system, the roles of living things,
water, and energy.
Physical
Education
S.P.A.R.K. (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids)
Program
The
Physical Education Program adopted by Warrick County
In
2000, Warrick County School Corporation adopted a Physical Education
program called S.P.A.R.K. This program is designed to teach social
skills and enhance kills without reducing activity time. The activities
do not stress winning or losing but improving your strength and activity
level.
The
SPARK program addresses the important public health problem by focusing
on increasing physical activity during class in ways that are creative
and fun for both student and teacher.
Warrick
County does not have Physical Education teachers in the elementary
schools at this time. However, Warrick County sent several teachers
to training to help implement this program. A coordinator from SPARK
came from California to give hands-on training! Money was spent to
buy equipment needed to use with each unit. The K-3 levels and the
4-6 levels work together to coordinate use of the equipment. The students
and teachers are enjoying the movement and activities of the SPARK
P.E. program!
